The Department of Medical Sciences is the largest department within the Faculty of Medicine, Uppsala University. The department has about 175 people employed and 120 research students registered, from where about 20 students defend their doctorial thesis each year. The basic educational program contains medical studies including occupational medicine, internal medicine, dermato/venerology, infectious diseases, clinical virology/ bacterology, clinical chemistry, clinical pharmacology, clinical physiology and nutrition. The unit also contains athletic medicine in Falun. Within the program for education of physiotherapists, education in medicine, rheumatology, clinical physiology and occupational medicine is provided and in the program for biomedical analysts, clinical chemistry. The research programs include everything from molecular medicine and genetics to nutrition in low income countries. Specific information is provided from the 30 research groups of the institution.
