2023-05-29

Region Uppsala's research prize is awarded each year to five people who, through their patient-related research, have contributed to significant improvements in healthcare. Jonas Oldgren, Senior Consultant and Professor, at the Department of Medical Sciences is one of the five laureates awarded the prize in 2022.
The prize was established in 2009 by the regional board and is awarded to employees of Region Uppsala who, through their patient-related research, have contributed to significant improvements in healthcare. The heads of departments with responsibility for clinical areas nominate candidates. An external review committee with broad clinical scientific expertise has been asked to rank the nominees according to the criteria established by the Regional Executive Board. The five laureates receive SEK 10,000 each.
Jonas Oldgren, Senior Consultant and Professor, receives the prize for his long-term work in clinical coagulation research with innovative and very large studies that have contributed to a radical improvement in the treatment of the serious public disease atrial fibrillation. For many years he has conducted research on blood clot-related cardiovascular complications such as myocardial infarction and atrial fibrillation.
In a constant quest for improvement, Jonas is currently involved in evaluating a completely new type of blood-thinning drug that may be even safer and more effective. The positive results motivated a new global mega-study where the first Swedish patient was recruited at Uppsala University Hospital in February 2023. Based on Jonas’s involvement in the management of the study and his interest in new study methodologies, Sweden has been selected as one of six countries to also conduct the study at a “virtual” study centre, which will be created at Uppsala Clinical Research Center.
The other four award winners are Sten Rubertsson, Senior Consultant and Professor at the Department of Surgical Sciences, Bengt Sandén, Senior Consultant and Docent at the Department of Surgical Sciences, Lena Wettergren, Nurse and Professor at the Department of Public Health and Care Sciences, and Anders Wanhainen, Senior Consultant and Professor at the department for Surgical Sciences.
