Coagulation and inflammation sciences
The group studying coagulation and inflammation is working with basic and clinical studies on thrombotic disorders, in particular coronary artery disease. The focus is on tissue factor biology and the interplay between coagulation and inflammation.
Tissue factor (TF) is a transmembrane glycoprotein and the main initiator of blood coagulation in vivo. Expression of TF suggests a critical role in thrombosis and inflammation, exemplified with thrombotic complications in arteriosclerosis, septicemia, cancer and metastasis. The research group focuses on the molecular mechanisms regulating induction and inhibition of TF in human monocytes, myelomonocytic cells and in a number of malignant cells using cell culture systems and whole blood environment. Current topics are: cell-cell contact, the role of cytokines, intracellular signal transduction pathways, genetical variations, new antithrombotic- and anti-inflammatory drugs and platelet inhibitors, and processes at cell-contact with biomaterials
Accumulating data during recent years have clearly identified TF as a true receptor. Beyond its role in hemostasis, the TF/FVIIa-complex mediates cellular signal transduction resulting in gene induction and implicating a possible role in various biological functions, such as embryonic development, cell migration, inflammation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, tumor metastasis and in the development of atherosclerosis. However, the signal transduction pathways and the biological functions transduced by TF/FVIIa are today incompletely known. Signal transduction pathways and biological functions mediated by TF/FVIIa are investigated with special references to gene induction, production of inflammatory markers and cell migration
Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in the western world. The research program aims to further the understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms and development of new diagnostic tools, prognostic markers and more individualized treatment strategies in these syndromes. Genotypes/phenotypes/environment interactions are investigated in a number of extended clinical studies
The Laboratory for Coagulation Research is the only highly specialized coagulation laboratory in this part of Sweden and the goal is to establish and develop new methods for applications in clinical studies. The research group collaborates in a number of global clinical studies on acute coronary syndromes and arterial fibrillation such as, FRISC2, GUSTO4, ESTEEM, TAAD, TABR, RELY, PLATO, ARISTOTLE and SWISCH.In this context the “Laboratory for Coagulation Research” is the core laboratory for cell-analyses, including cellular signalling, markers for activation of coagulation and inflammation in plasma and at the gene level.
Applications are invited for PhD and postdoctoral positions. You are welcome to do in-depth studies for 5-20 weeks in our group. Especially students from läkarprogrammet, apotekarprogrammet, biomedicinarprogrammet, or civilingenjörsprogrammen are invited to apply. Are you interested please contact professor Agneta Siegbahn.
